With the 4th of July approaching, there will be lots of hot dogs, brats and sausages hitting the grill! So I’d like to share a timely gluten-free product discovery – Gilbert’s Craft Sausages’ gluten free hot dogs, sausages and – get this – gluten free beer bratwurst! Yeah, there are several gluten free hot dogs and sausages out there, but brats are harder to find. I don’t know of any other gluten-free beer brats. And it gets better – no added nitrates or nitrites, no BHA or BHT, no added MSG, no corn syrup, no hydrolyzed soy or corn protein and higher quality cuts of meat like beef sirloin. FYI – this is not a review for hire – I’m just sharing a product I stumbled upon.
Gilbert’s is a small craft sausage business, based in Plymouth, Wisconsin that appears to just be hitting critical mass. They have a pretty good presence in the Midwest, including Costco and Walmart “neighborhood markets”. They ‘re not in the western or northeastern U.S. yet, but availability is good in the Southeast, because Harris Teeter has picked them up. You can check their store locator to see if they’re in your area.
The sausages are cooked, so they’ll keep in the fridge a good while. And they’re individually wrapped making it really easy to just take out as many as you want even if you’ve frozen them. We grilled ours. Just put them on a hot grill long enough to get some pretty grill marks, heat them through, and you’re ready to chow down. Both the hot dogs and brats were nice and juicy and tasty. What a treat to have a grilled beer bratwurst with sauerkraut after all these years living gluten free!

In addition to the hot dogs and brats, Gilbert’s makes some cheese sausages: beef and bleu, beef and cheddar, and chipotle, mozzarella and lime. I guess being based in Wisconsin, there would have to be some cheese! We didn’t try any of them, because we deal with dairy sensitivity, but they sound pretty tasty.
One caveat for those who like to stick to gluten-free facilities: Gilbert’s uses a co-packer that does process some gluten-containing beer brats. They estimate the gluten in those brats at less than 5 parts per million and they take precautions cleaning between batches to avoid cross-contamination. They also process products containing oat bran which is considered to be gluten free.
